Greece win first friendly against Algeria in five sets

Greece beat Algeria in five sets

Thessaloniki, Greece, May 28, 2016 – The Greece men’s team opened their series of friendlies against Algeria with a tie-break win (21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 19-17) as their preparation continues for the 2016 FIVB World League.

“It is certainly positive to start the season with a win, but we still we have a lot of work to do,” said Greece coach Sotirios Drikos. “Despite the result or the performance of my players, we have a long way ahead of us and we need to cross it in a short period of time.

“Many of our players didn’t play a lot with their clubs so we need to be much more focused in our training and our matches. This is the only way to improve as fast as we have to in order to achieve our goals.”

Greece and Algeria will play two more matches over the weekend in Thessaloniki. The Greek team will then travel to Izmir to face Turkey, Spain and Estonia.

Greece are in Group 3 of the 2016 FIVB World League, hosting two pools in Kozani (June 17-19 with Kazakhstan, Puerto Rico and Chinese Taipei) and in Thessaloniki (June 25-27 with Puerto Rico, Qatar and Slovenia).
