Hoag: Schmitt really helped us

Team Canada

Saskatoon, Canada, June 24, 2016 - Canada defeated China in straight sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-17) extending their winning streak to five matches at the 2016 World League. The only other team in Group 2 without defeat is Turkey.

Glenn Hoag, coach of Canada: The tournament so far is going well, result wise anyway. We’re trying different guys. We have to make a selection at the end of World League for the Olympics. The guys behaved well. A few too many errors in the first set, which made it a little tight but after that the guys settled down. It was Gavin’s first match since Japan and he’s a little rusty but he picked up his game and really helped us win this one.

Yang Liqun, coach of China: We did not perform very well today. Tomorrow we will play Korea. We will make many different changes with our players for that game.”

John Gordon Perrin, Canada: I didn’t go to the first weekend but I thought the guys played really well. We were able to sweep the weekend which was huge. This is a preparation for the Olympic Games and we feel we are above this level and want to be in the first division but it didn’t work out this year. I thought we played well today, it was a really clean game. We started off making errors but then we controlled it after that and were able to win 3-0. I don’t know how the coaching staff will be able to pick the Olympic team, I’m glad I don’t have to pick the team. I wouldn’t want to have to cut 2, 3, 4, players since it’s only a 12 man roster. It’s a pretty tough job for the coaching staff and I’ll leave that up to them.

Shaui Jiao, captain of China: Tomorrow’s match is very important for us and we will do everything we can to win. We are the same level as Korea, so this match is very important for us to win.
