Gungor shines as Turkey defeat Slovakia in straight sets

 

A powerful spike from Turkey's Baturalp Gungor

Izmir, Turkey, June 18, 2016 - Turkey's Baturalp Gungor scored match-high 13 points contributing to his team's victory over Slovakia 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 25-22) in the FIVB World League encounter on Saturday afternoon.

Turkey registered their second consecutive win in this year's World League campaign after beating Portugal 3-1 on Friday night while Slovakia had to accept the second defeat after losing to Netherlands 3-1.

First set saw both teams fighting for every point and none could establish any significant advantage. In the late stage Tukey build up a three points margin at 20-17, but Slovakia bounced back to tie the score at 23-all. Finally Turkey's best scorer Baturalp Gungor smashed two spikes to seal the victory 27-25.





Slovakia started strong into the second set leading 4-0 and 8-3 at the first technical timeout. But Turkey managed to refocus and after winning three points in a row went 9-8 up. Both teams were trading points and in a very tight encounter Turkey won decisive points to take the set 25-23.




In set three Turkey established an early lead 3-0 which they managed to keep until the end finishing it off at 25-22.
