Elkotb earns Preliminary Round plaudits

Egypt's Ahmed Elkotb in action at the net against Turkey

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 6, 2016 - Maarten Van Garderen (6th overall) and Wouter Ter Maat (7th) of the Netherlands, and Alexandre Ferreira (8th) of Portugal are the highest scoring players participating in the FIVB Volleyball World League Group 2 Finals from July 9 to 10. All three have scored 133 points in three weeks of Preliminary Round action, which means they need to score a total of 55 points during the Finals in Portugal to equal the 188 points scored by Group 2 top scorer Ahmed Elkotb of Egypt.

Elkotb added to his total last week by scoring 22 points in his team's 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands. He was again his team's top scorer in their five-set loss to Korea, also with 22 points. Elkotb then scored another 19 points against the Czech Republic on Sunday, but again his team failed to capitalise and lost in three sets to end the Group 2 Preliminary Round in seventh position.

Portugal welcome Canada, Turkey and the Netherlands to Matosinhos for the Group 2 Finals from July 9-10. The first semifinal will see Canada take on Turkey before hosts Portugal play the Netherlands - both matches are on Saturday. The matches for first and third place will take place on Sunday.
