Egypt look to overcome almost 40 years of hurt

 

Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, June 18, 2016 – It has been nearly40 years since Egypt have beaten Canada in a competitive match, and they will look to end that losing spell on Saturday in the FIVB Volleyball World League.

Head-to-Head
· Canada and Egypt have met seven times before, with Egypt winning the first meeting and Canada the other six.
· Egypt's only victory was at the 1977 World Cup (3-1).
· This is the first meeting between these nations at the World League.
· The last meeting was at the 2015 World Cup, when Canada won 3-2. Egypt's Ahmed Abdelhay scored 36 of 108 points (33%) in that match.

Canada
· Canada won in straight sets against China in their first match at the 2016 World League on Friday, to end their three-match losing streak in the competition.
· Canada could win their first two matches of a single World League campaign for the third consecutive season.
· Canada could record back-to-back 3-0 wins for the first in the World League since May 2015, when they started their 2015 World League campaign with two straight-set wins against Cuba.
· Graham Vigrass, with 15 points Canada's top scorer in their 3-0 win over China, and Steven Marshall both scored a team-high 11 spikes in their opener. 

Egypt
· Egypt claimed a five-set victory against Czech Republic in their opening match on Friday.
· Egypt have now won nine of their last 10 World League matches and are unbeaten in their last eight since a 3-2 defeat against Spain in their 2015 World League opening match. 
· Egypt could kick off a World League campaign with two straight victories for the first time ever.
· Ahmed Elkotb scored a match-high 26 points for Egypt in their 3-2 win over Czech Republic, including 22 spikes. Ahmed Afifi followed with 12 points.
