Dutch challenge for Final Four hosts Portugal

 

Matosinhos, Portugal, July 6, 2016 - Final Four hosts Portugal will lock horns with the Netherlands in the second FIVB Volleyball World League 2016 Group 2 semifinal in Matosinhos.

Head-to-Head
• Portugal and Netherlands will clash for the 12th time in World League history. Netherlands have won seven of the previous 11 meetings. Portugal have recorded four wins.
• These nations will meet for the first time in a World League knockout tie.
• Netherlands have won four of the last five World League matches against Portugal.
• Three of Portugal's four World League wins over Netherlands came in five sets. Four of their seven defeats were in straight sets.

Portugal
• Portugal finished bottom of Group 2, but will enter the Final Four as host nation.
• Portugal have won only two of their last 13 World League matches.
• Portugal have lost their last seven World League matches on home soil, since a 3-0 win over Korea on 5 July 2014.
• Sixty-one of Portugal's 115 World League defeats came in straight sets (53%).
• Only Japan (111), Korea (83) and China (83) have lost more World League matches in straight sets than Portugal (61).
• Alexandre Ferreira has scored a team-high 133 points for Portugal in this year's World League. Only five players have managed to score more points in Group 2.

Netherlands
• Netherlands have won four of their last five World League matches, but have lost both their matches in their previous play-offs, when they lost against Australia and Belgium in 2014.
• Netherlands have won three of their previous four World League matches in Portugal. Their sole defeat came on 22 June 2014 against hosts Portugal (3-1).
• Maarten van Garderen and Wouter ter Maat both scored 133 points for Netherlands in the Preliminary Round.
