Coskun steers Turks to fine win over Portugal

Turkey were just too strong for a solid Portugal side

Izmir, Turkey, June 17, 2016 – Serhat Coskun spiked superbly as Turkey beat Portugal 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 28-30, 25-19) in their World League match on Friday.

This is Turkey’s third appearance in the tournament (having previously taken part in 2014 and 2015), and the 13th Portuguese participation.

Portugal’s Alexandre Ferreira was the match top scorer, with 23 points, but it was not enough to save his side, who made just a few too many errors.

Turkey took the first set 25-22, with the spiking of Serhat Coskun particularly lethal.

Marco Ferreira and Alexandre Ferreira both worked hard and scored well for the Portuguese, but the second set was also dominated by Coskun’s great hitting, and with Baturalp Burak Gungor also playing excellently, the Turks took set two 25-20.

Both Ferreiras and Marcel Keller Gil fought hard for the Portuguese as they showed their spirit in set three, warding off a Turkey side looking for a straight set win, and grabbing the set themselves, 30-28.

But with Coskun and the excellent Nadir Cin rampant in the fourth, the Turks closed out the match with a 25-19 set win.
