Luca Vettori spikes over the block

Kraków, Poland, July 12, 2016 - Italy finished fifth in the Preliminary Round with six matches won and three lost courtesy of Luca Vettori who scored 123 points and Ivan Zaytsev with only two points less.

They were defeated by France, USA and Serbia but claimed fifth place to qualify for the Finals in Krakow.


FIVB Volleyball World League Group 1 Ranking after the Preliminary Round


Italy have competed in all 27 editions of the FIVB Volleyball World League. They finished fifth in last year’s edition after claiming bronze in Florence in 2014. The Azzurri have eight titles, one fewer than Brazil, and they will be looking to repeat their 1995 heroics when they beat the South Americans in the final in Rio de Janeiro.

This year Italy are led by Gianlorenzo Blengini who was appointed on August 1, 2015 as the temporary head coach replacing Mauro Berruto.
