Serbia in search of first World League title

Uros Kovacevic has been Serbia's leading scoring during the Preliminary Round with 111 points

Kraków, Poland, July 11, 2016 - Serbia travel to Poland as the third ranked team after the Preliminary Round with seven victories in nine matches. Uros Kovacevic was the team's top scorer with 111 points won.

This year's World League competition started well for Serbia who claimed three victories in the first tournament comfortably beating Russia, Poland and Bulgaria in straight sets. Serbia emulated that achievement in the next weekend, sailing past Brazil, Iran and Bulgaria. They had to accept two defeats in the last weekend, however, to Iran and Argentina.

Serbia are the only team in Krakow who are yet to take a World League title. They did not qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Between 2003 and 2009, Serbia appeared in four World League Finals and lost on each occasion. In 2003, 2005 (both times participating as Serbia and Montenegro) and 2009 their tormentors were Brazil, while in 2008 the United States beat them 3-1.

Several standout players earned individual awards during this era, including Ivan Miljkovic, who remains the only player to be named the World League’s MVP four times. Serbia’s performances dipped in 2011 and 2012 when they finished both editions in ninth place. They improved when they placed eighth and sixth in 2013 and 2014, respectively. They bounced back in 2015 as they entered the Final Six and won silver in Rio de Janeiro.
