Van Walle: It’s down to experience

Gert Van Walle believes Belgium can win close matches in the future

Nancy, France, July 3, 2016 - After losing to Brazil yesterday Belgium conceded another tiebreak, falling to Poland 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 13-15) in Nancy on Sunday.

François Lecat, player, Belgium: I got an opportunity and I took it, I’m very happy about this, it’s just a pity we’re not able to conclude in the tiebreak. Because I think this last set is just a mental thing, we know we’re going, we know it’s until 15 points and every mistake is pretty bad. So I think as a team we have to improve this. We lose a lot of tiebreaks. So yeah it’s a pity, afterward the feeling is a bit mixed.

Sam Deroo, captain, Belgium: We’re used to playing against strong teams in  the past years, we’re used to this, playing high-level games. We meet all these players day-by-day and week-by-week. It’s nice, this atmosphere, to play these high-level games for sure, but we don’t have to be surprised anymore to play these games. I think for the next year this should be standard for us and we have to win those games. Against these teams, that’s important for our future.

Gert Van Walle, player, Belgium: Mentality wasn’t the problem tonight, I think it’s about experience. We’re a young team and you know those guys play every game at the highest level, for us it’s the first time we play in such a high divisio It’s experience I think but I hope, I’m almost certain of it, we’ll gain experience throughout the years; it’s just a pity to lose here, even if Poland was quite strong.
