Canada and Turkey clash for one spot in Group 2 final

 

Matosinhos, Portugal, July 6, 2016 - Canada and Turkey will meet in the first FIVB Volleyball World League 2016 Group 2 semifinal in Portugal.

Head-to-Head
• This will be the first ever meeting between Canada and Turkey at a major tournament.
• Canada have won four of their last five World League matches against CEV opposition. In 1999, they lost their first three matches on their World League debut against CEV team France.
• Turkey have won four of their last five World League matches against NORCECA sides. In 2014, they lost their first ever World League match 3-1 against NORCECA side Cuba.

Canada
• Canada have qualified for the Group 2 Final Four as group winners. They lost only one of their nine Preliminary Round matches this season, the 3-2 defeat in their final match against Finland.
• Five of Canada's eight wins at this year's World League came in straight sets. Only France (Group 1) and Italy (Group 1) also managed to record five 3-0 wins this season.
• Canada could record back-to-back five-set defeats for the second time in World League history after June 2015.
• John Gordon Perrin is Canada's top scorer, with 84 points (26th overall in Group 2).

Turkey
• Turkey have entered the Final Four with eight wins and one defeat in the Group 2 Preliminary Round.
• Turkey have lost only one of their last 12 World League matches and are unbeaten in their last three since a 3-1 defeat over Egypt on 26 June.
• Turkey have won each of their previous three World League matches in July, including two in straight sets.
• Baturalp Burak Gungor has scored a team-high 110 points for Turkey at the 2016 World League. Metin Toy follows with 92 points.
